The Correct Way to Wear Shawls in Cold Weather: Do’s and Don’ts

How many times have you stepped out in winter with a shawl and yet found yourself shivering by eve? I know, we’ve all been there at some point or other.

So is it about the shawl? Is the shawl not warm enough? The most common conclusion would be that the shawl is not made of a good material.

But the truth is far from it. It’s not just about the shawl; it’s about how you waer or style it.

In this article, we’re spilling the tea on how to wear shawls in winter like a pro. Let’s start.

Do: Pick the Right Fabric

First things first. Fabric is everything. Don’t trust me yet? Let me show you why!

Since you are going out in the winter, you want something that’s legit warm. Something that’s not just a cute accessory, but can also help you shield yourself from the chills.

In that case, consider Wool, or cashmere. Those should be your first choice for winter.

I had to brave a snowstorm in a fancy napkin to know this. Don’t believe me? Well, I once snagged this gorgeous shawl online. It was a total eye-candy but it was some flimsy synthetic nonsense.

So always…..always check the material before purchasing your shawl.

Don’t: Let It Hang Loose

Okay, I know you think that draping a shawl all loose and flowy looks effortless. But dear one, it’s a one-way ticket to Cold Drafts City.

You know it's not going to be working either for the style or for the cold.

This would be a big style mistake. So don’t just throw your shawl over your shoulders; style it well. Practice different drapes and carry what you are most comfortable with.

Do: Master the Drape

There’s an art to this, and once you nail it, I tell you no-one can beat your style.

My personal favorite drape is folding that shawl into a triangle, draping it over your shoulders, and cinching it with a belt. It’s like a warm, stylish hug!

Or, you can wrap it around your neck and let the ends hang in front. Its simple and yet stylish.

I messed this up big time once in the process of trying to copy some celeb’s style. And I ended up looking like a burrito with no warmth to show for it.

So yes, just know that you are free to play around and find your groove. It’s totally worth it.

Don’t: Go Too Small or Too Big

Size matters, y’all. Too small, and you’re barely covered. Too big, and you’re swimming in fabric.

I borrowed my friend’s oversized shawl once, thinking I’d look all boho-chic. But nope.

I was actually a kid in a blanket, tripping over myself. So pick a size that fits your frame. It should provide ample coverage.

Do: Layer Like a Pro

Shawls are MVPs for layering. Toss one over a sweater or under a coat for that extra toasty factor.

I’m obsessed with pairing a chunky knit shawl with my leather jacket. Texture for the style and I stay warm AF.

Pro tip: keep the colors and patterns on the same wavelength so they don’t clash. It’s all about that cohesive style, not two or pieces that compete with each other.

Don’t: Forget the Accessories

A shawl can enhance your whole look, but don’t sleep on accessories. Add a classy, antique brooch or a sleek belt.

Don’t let your shawl just flop around aimlessly. Make it work for you and your style.

So, if you are styling shawls in winter, make sure you don’t just serve looks. You should also feel warm and comfy.

So go ahead, play with these tips, and find your sweet spot with shawl styling.
